“What’s an Avox?” I ask stupidly.
“Someone who committed a crime. They cut her tongue so she can’t speak,” says Haymitch. “She’s probably a traitor of some sort. Not likely you’d know her.” (6.23-24)
As we learn here, traitors to the government have their tongues cut out and become servants called Avoxes.
Why do you think it’s significant that the government removes the tongue? What is it about being able to speak that’s so important?
THIS WILL COUNT AS AN EXAM QUESTION, SO ANSWER CAREFULLY!

DeleteRemoving the tounge is also taking away what little liberty you have left. You can never have a say in your fate...literally. It robs you of what little freedom you have left, and by doing that, the government completely enslaves you. You can't rebel, even with words. You are enslaved.

DeleteI think having the tounge removed is a lesson of two things, one being that it will teach her respect and disapline. To be submissive at all times and to not speak out of turn about things that could start a revolution among the other districts.
